Tavolara and Molara pools
The Tavolara Marine Protected Area protects fifteen thousand hectares of sea and about 40 km of coastal territory, considered among the most beautiful in Sardinia.
The coastline, characterized by the ancient forms of Paleozoic granites, is rich in suggestive coves, in which the Mediterranean scrub, with impressive specimens of juniper, arbutus, and filiera, reaches down to the sea. But it is the island system, which constitutes the heart of the biodiversity of this area, that imparts a special charm to the landscape: the contrast between the limestone mass of Tavolara, L’isola Drago rising from the sea, with its rugged and vertical forms and the smaller islands, Molara, Molarotto, L’isola Piana and dei Cavalli, rounded and granitic.
The underwater environments are characterized by vast expanses of Posidonia oceanica prairie, a marine phanerogamous plant that originates the most productive ecosystems in the Mediterranean, and various forms of Mediterranean coralligenous, which grows at different depths, building scenery of great beauty, much sought after by underwater tourism.
